Paying a bribe to a police officer is a criminal offence and can land you in jail.

A Jamestown motorist was found guilty and sentenced on charges of attempting to bribe a traffic officer. Two Aliwal North based officers Mr Slinger and Mr Makhele arrested the accused when he attempted to bribe the officer who was trying to ticket him with a fifty rand note.

The officer had reprimanded the accused for overloading the vehicle driven and was about to issue the culprit with a fine when the incident occurred. The accused was found guilty of the charge and was sentenced to 5 months in prison or a fine of R1 000.00 which was suspended for 3 years
